Ischemix is developing small molecule drugs for the treatment and/or prevention of ischemia-reperfusion injury. These compounds have been created by modifying known molecules with cell survival and anti-oxidant properties through the addition of chemical groups to enhance solubility, and optimize cell survival and anti-oxidant properties. This medicinal chemistry progression, guided by testing the compounds in cells and animals, has led to the development of a drug candidate and several backup compounds. CMX-2043 combines cell survival and anti-oxidant activity in a single dual-action molecule.
Efficacy studies using well developed and validated industry-standard methods show that these compounds reduce cell death after MI by amounts both statistically and clinically significant. Ischemix believes that they can potentially be used either as stand-alone therapeutics or as adjuncts to thrombolytic drugs such as tPA. Ischemix has begun clinical trials to demonstrate that CMX-2043 is effective in humans.
