Anti-Arrhythmic Indication

Atrial fibrillation (AF), rapid unsynchronized contractions of the upper chambers of the heart, commonly occurs post-operatively in cardiac patients. This arrhythmia, though rarely life-threatening, extends hospital stay. And, because clots which form on the wall of the fibrillating chamber can be pumped out to the brain, uncorrected AF requires expensive long-term anticoagulant treatment to prevent stroke. By applying its core chemical technology, Ischemix has created a new anti-arrhythmic agent from a known natural molecule. Initial pre-clinical studies show both efficacy and safety for this indication. In 2012, Ischemix plans to extend these studies in order to begin a clinical trial for peri-operative AF in bypass graft patients.
